Chapter 14

Back home, Doreen quickly unloaded the animals, put on a pot of coffee, and poured herself a large cup. With the animals in tow, she walked down to the creek and collapsed on the bank. What a day, what an afternoon, what an ending. She’d managed to escape Nan’s place pretty quickly, especially once things had blown up, starting with Richie coming and berating the gardener, and Nan going at the gardener, poking him in the chest for daring to touch Doreen.

Then it just got uglier from there.

Management had been brought in, and Doreen had taken that opportunity to disappear. Now lying on the grass in the late-afternoon sun, she was tired, worn out, and still worried about Mack. She pulled out her phone and sent him a text message, asking if he was okay. When no answer came right away, she fumed and fussed and worried some more. Mugs came over and sat down beside her, his head rubbing up and down her thigh. She scratched him gently, and even Thaddeus hopped up on her belly and just sat there, perched.

“I don’t know, guys. It started off as a good day, and it was still a good day by noon, but the way home and after that? Yeah, that was just not much fun.”

She still didn’t understand what the truck driver would have wanted, but the good news was, somebody was bothered by the questions she’d asked, and that was huge. It wasn’t huge in a good way because, as soon as anybody started to get upset about things like that, Doreen had to wonder how far they were willing to go to keep the general public from finding out whatever they were afraid she’d find out.

Were they willing to kill her? That was the big question because, if they were, she was in trouble again. And she wasn’t sure how she kept getting into that kind of trouble, but she knew, if Mack thought it was that serious, then he would put a stop to her investigation completely. The captain would back him up too.

But then again, if she could get enough details on this cold case for them to carry on with their own investigation, they wouldn’t need her, and they could go after whoever this culprit was on their own. But trying to find somebody who was now lost in the mall was a whole different story.

Plus, if the driver didn’t need that truck, they could just leave it behind, forgetting about it. Maybe it was stolen in the first place, in which case they only had to steal another one to get away. The mall offered an awful lot of opportunity for that to happen. Groaning, she lay here, just trying to empty her mind and to let everything that happened float freely about.

She still had a bunch of phone calls to make in order to get to the bottom of some of these answers. And one of those phone calls was to the captain.
